Spring Color Doesn't Have to Come from Blooms

April 17, 2016

While we often rely on blooming annuals and perennials for spring color, However, new growth on conifers can provide great color and texture in a garden.

It is important to remember that conifers aren’t just green. Garden conifers come in a rainbow of year-round colors that can be used effectively with companion plants.

Throughout spring, lighter shades of new growth will contrast with darker older foliage. In some cases, new growth emerges not just as a lighter shade of green but as a bright yellow or red, rivaling any blooms. Other conifers can exhibit bright colors in their cones and seed-bearing fruits providing additional decoration during certain seasons of the year.
